SHOWCASE's insect counting app featured by CORDIS

15 July 2024

A new feature in CORDIS spotlights SHOWCASE’s insect counting progressive web application - InsectsCount. CORDIS is the European Commission's primary public platform for providing comprehensive information about EU research and development projects, where various stakeholders, such as policymakers, researchers, experts, practitioners and the general public across Europe obtain information on key developments within the field of research and innovation. Partially based upon SHOWCASE’s press release in EurekAlert! and AlphaGalileo, the CORDIS feature on the InsectsCount app, is available in six different languages, namely English, German, Spanish, Italian, French and Polish.

The InsectsCount app, designed to promote biodiversity, enables farmers to effectively monitor flower-visiting insects. By building an observer community, the app fosters a hands-on learning environment where users share observations on pollinator species, contributing to our understanding of the relationship between insect populations, land use and management practices.

Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are vital to agriculture, aiding in the reproduction of about 75% of crops grown worldwide for human consumption. However, their declining numbers necessitate urgent conservation efforts. The InsectsCount app supports these efforts by providing a platform for monitoring insect populations and identifying species at risk.

CORDIS's recognition of this initiative underscores the app's significance in promoting sustainable farming practices, enhancing biodiversity and encouraging more farmers and communities to safeguard pollinators and ensure food security for future generations.
