SHOWCASE policy: Project member chairs the BIODIVERSA+ advisory board

24 October 2023

Amidst the growing emphasis on nature-focused decision making, SHOWCASE takes the opportunity to highlight some of its contributions to shaping and enhancing environmental policy on different scales.

In 2022, SHOWCASE member András Báldi (Centre for Ecological Research) became the chair of the Advisory Board of the Biodiversa+ Partnership, with his mandate lasting until 2025. One of the Partnership’s objectives is to generate practical knowledge to address the direct and indirect drivers of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.

The Advisory Board's main role is to provide regular relevant scientific advice to the Biodiversa+ formal decision-making body for the overall strategy and priorities of the Programme. This fosters an ongoing and open dialogue between scientific experts and policymakers – an essential element in identifying shared solutions to environmental challenges. In a 2022 interview with András, he underscored the importance of research proposals being embraced by decision-makers:

“[...] at the Ecological Research Centre are not afraid to use open research, so we have indeed laid all our cards on the table. For example, we will investigate the diversity of bee species and the reasons for the loss of diversity. We share our findings with policy makers, especially the Ministry of Agriculture, for example on where and how many wildflower plots we propose to plant in order to “attract” pollinating bees to a particular area and thus establish stable bee populations in the area.”
