SHOWCASE on EU CAP Network: Farmers' decision towards biodiversity

3 March 2025

SHOWCASE published its fourth practice abstract on the EU CAP Network, aiming to facilitate knowledge transfer from practice-oriented projects to farmers, advisors and other actors who might benefit from their results.

The practice abstract, authored by partner ZALF, presents a survey of 700 European farmers, which revealed key factors shaping their decisions on biodiversity-friendly practices. While many are motivated by environmental stewardship, they need financial and advisory support for both implementing and maintaining biodiversity measures. Strengthening cooperation along the value chain—through food hubs and consumer engagement—can help develop markets for biodiversity-friendly products. Spatial coordination incentives can enhance habitat connectivity, while independent advisory services can bridge knowledge gaps. Biodiversity labeling alone has limited influence, but integrating biodiversity into the EU organic label or private initiatives could make conservation efforts more visible and marketable.
